Coronavirus (COVID-19)

Thursday, August 12, 2021 Update:

As we begin a new semester at HLGU, the administration has been monitoring the recommendations of local, state, and federal health authorities in regards to COVID-19 prevention. After much deliberation and consultation with the Marion County Health Department, we plan to take the following precautions for the Fall 2021 semester.

  • Masks are recommended for indoor events when social distancing is not possible.
  • Move-in day appointment times are required to avoid overcrowding.
  • Continue COVID prevention cleaning of common areas (classrooms, cafeteria, bathrooms, etc.)
  • Electronic temperature checks will be taken before entering the Parker theater for Chapel services.
  • Students and faculty/staff must self-report a positive COVID test within 2 hours of receiving results via this COVID Report Form.
  • Hand sanitizer and wipe stations are provided throughout campus.
  • Quarantine/Self-Isolation housing and meals will be provided to residential students who must self-isolate or quarantine on campus.
  • Remote learning will be available to those in self-isolation or quarantine.
  • Follow local, state, and federal guidelines on self-isolation, quarantine, and identifying close-contacts. (Detailed information is available in the Human Resources Office)

We are closely monitoring the recommendations of local, state, and federal agencies and will adapt our opening plan if necessary.  Thank you in advance for your observance of these policies.  We want to provide a safe place for students and mitigate risks of exposure.

Monday, May 17, 2020 Update:

Beginning Monday, May 17, 2021, Hannibal-LaGrange University is making the following adjustments to the COVID-19 protocol on campus. These changes are being made after reviewing state and local guidelines.

Please wear your mask when indoors (exceptions: In dorm rooms, personal office space or when seated and eating in Cafe or Loft). • Enforcing room capacity limits in several locations on campus.
  • Requiring students to physically distance in chapel services.
  • Asking students to self-report if you have been tested for and/or have been exposed to a COVID-19 positive person.  Contact Student Life immediately.

Wednesday, August 12 Updates

Students,

Our campus couldn’t be more excited to welcome you back in a just a few short days! We are so ready to be together in one place again. In light of your return, we have made some additional changes to our reopen plan. Please see the reference guide below to learn about how we will deal with any known cases that affect our community. Also note that beginning 8/12, HLGU is requiring all employees, students, and guests to wear a mask in public areas and classrooms until at least September 8th, or further notice from administration. This is a change in policy from our last update.  Since students and employees will be reconvening together from various locations, we have put this safety measure in place to ensure we have the safest return to campus. The City of Hannibal has also asked those out and about to wear a mask.

Residential Students: You will be provided with two cloth masks along with other sanitation materials when you arrive onto campus!

Commuter Students: You may come to the Student Life office to pick up your masks and sanitation materials!

If you have any questions please email Dean of Students, Josh Pierce at Joshua.pierce@anna-mina.com.

Friday, July 17 Update

Greetings,

I am so excited to welcome students to the HLGU campus this fall. As promised, we are sending this message to communicate a framework for re-opening campus to provide a safe, in-person living and learning experience. Thank you for your patience and understanding while we worked through these plans.

Additional details for our plan are outlined below. You will undoubtedly have questions, and we do not have all the answers yet. We will, of course, share more as the semester approaches. I ask for your continued patience and grace. It is true that the efforts required for us to stay healthy will involve a commitment and some sacrifices from all of the HLGU family. At this time, any questions should be directed to the dean of students, Mr. Josh Pierce (joshua.pierce@anna-mina.com).

As we look to the future, I am confident that this plan demonstrates who we are and who we represent at HLGU. We are characterized by our people, by our faith, and by God. We are His people. We are His community. We are HLGU!

Sincerely yours,

Anthony W. Allen

Commitment to a Healthy Community

Students, staff, and faculty all play an important role in building and sustaining a culture of accountability and personal responsibility at HLGU. Every person on campus will be asked to sign an agreement to live responsibly so we have the best chance of remaining in person, on campus for the entirety of the semester. Living responsibly assumes the following:

  • Distancing – We will do our best to physically distance from one another whenever possible. We understand there are some situations where we may not be able to maintain a 6-foot distance. In those events wearing face coverings, practicing good hygiene, and engaging in additional sanitization may be necessary.
  • Face Coverings – All HLGU faculty, staff, and students will be provided an HLGU-branded face mask. Anyone may choose to wear face coverings on campus at any time. Masks are required for any indoor events with groups over 50 and are recommended in the following areas:
    • In class
    • Inside all buildings
    • Dorm commons

We ask students to respect the wishes of instructors and wear masks during class if the faculty member makes that request.

  • Sanitization – All HLGU faculty, staff, and students will be provided hand sanitizer and a spray bottle of disinfectant. All classrooms and common areas are equipped with sanitization tools. Living responsibly includes all faculty, staff, and students playing an active role in keeping our areas clean. This entails washing hands often with soap and water, using hand sanitizer, wiping down surfaces before and after use, as well as keeping clothing, belongings, and personal and shared spaces clean.
  • Monitoring Symptoms – All HLGU faculty, staff, and students should self-monitor their health and stay home from classes and/or work and report to a medical professional if any COVID-19 or flu symptoms are present. HLGU reserves the right to require a COVID-19 test of any faculty, staff, and students.
  • Disclose Exposure – We ask all HLGU faculty, staff, and students to disclose any direct exposure to someone diagnosed with COVID-19. HLGU reserves the right to require a COVID-19 test and require quarantine of any faculty, staff, and students.
  • Travel During the Semester – Part of living responsibly during this time includes limiting non-essential travel. HLGU encourages all faculty, staff, and students to avoid highly populated areas and/or COVID-19 hot spots if at all possible.

Academic Calendar

HLGU’s current plan is to follow the published fall 2020 academic calendar which begins Monday, August 24th, includes all break days as currently planned, and ends Thursday, December 17th. However, HLGU administration will continue to monitor the guidance from federal, state, and local health authorities and reserves the right to adjust this calendar if needed. At this point, it is too early to make decisions about the spring 2021 academic calendar. If public health concerns prompt us to begin reconsidering dates, administration will communicate as soon as possible.

Academics

HLGU has always been committed to smaller class-sizes to foster a relational academic experience. Therefore, most of our in-person classes already provide adequate space to adhere to social distancing guidelines. For the few classes that don’t provide adequate space, we are in the process of capping enrollment and considering reassigning class locations. Additionally, we are preparing instructional spaces with learning support technology, such as cameras and microphones, to allow for remote engagement (see below).

HLGU administration has previously communicated our intent to hold in-person classes this academic year. A second wave of COVID-19 could prompt a quick pivot to remote learning. We would pursue this shift only if federal, state, or local health restrictions required us to do so. This summer, HLGU is providing professional development for our faculty to help them strengthen their skills in online teaching.

HLGU faculty, staff, and students may choose to wear face coverings on campus at any time. Masks are recommended inside all buildings and in class. We ask students to respect the wishes of instructors and wear masks during class if the faculty member makes that request. Additionally, all classrooms are equipped with sanitization tools. We ask students to take responsibility for sanitizing their classroom learning space at the beginning of each class.

We encourage students to self-advocate and initiate dialogue with faculty and staff if additional reasonable accommodations need to be made in any learning environment. HLGU employees will make every effort to ensure that the students’ needs are met and that they feel safe inside the classroom.

Remote Engagement

HLGU values the in-person learning and on-campus experience. However, we understand there may be circumstances that necessitate remote engagement. Students who would like to continue their education but need to take part remotely may apply for consideration through the office of academic administration. Applications will be reviewed and students will be notified of the decision promptly. For questions, or to request an application, email academics@anna-mina.com. You can view the application here.

Student Life

HLGU is committed to creating a God-honoring exceptional experience on our campus. However, campus life will look different this fall. Student life personnel are currently finalizing details, but here is a preview of our current plans.

  • TrojanCARE – HLGU is implementing a way for our students to receive unlimited telehealth visits with a licensed physician. Full-time students will have access to a doctor without ever leaving their dorm room or home through video call. More information will be sent out to prior to the start of the semester. Please be aware that a charge of $39 per semester will be added to your account.
  • Housing – Prior to coming to campus, HLGU residential staff requests that residential students self-quarantine at home for 14 days. Upon arrival, a COVID-19 symptom screening will take place before move-in is allowed. A safe move-in process is being developed and will be communicated to students soon. All HLGU residential students will be provided hand sanitizer and a spray bottle of disinfectant. Students are expected to play an active role in keeping personal areas clean. This entails washing hands often with soap and water, using hand sanitizer, wiping down surfaces before and after use, as well as keeping clothing, belongings, and personal and shared spaces clean. HLGU contracts with an outside cleaning service, and they will provide additional cleaning in common areas such as kitchens, lounges, laundry areas, and bathrooms.
  • Isolation/Quarantine Housing – HLGU reserves the right to require students to isolate/quarantine due to potential or confirmed COVID-19 diagnosis. HLGU prefers that students needing to quarantine do so at home but HLGU has prepared rooms for residential students to quarantine on campus if they choose to do so. In these situations, HLGU will make accommodations for safe food delivery and/or remote engagement to maintain progress in their coursework.
  • Dining – At HLGU we value community-style dining and we are working to keep this available and safe for all. HLGU contracts with an outside dining service, and like us they are committed to safe dining practices. The dining staff will be screened for COVID-19 symptoms daily and will wear face coverings and gloves at all times. The serving line will be completely hands-free and will rely on disposable dining items. The HLGU dining hall will be configured to allow for social distancing.
  • Chapel – The spiritual development of students is of utmost importance to the mission of HLGU and the weekly chapel experience is a key component. Students will be required to follow social distancing when selecting seats. However, a student approved for remote engagement may complete chapel attendance virtually through a Canvas course. There will be no modification to the chapel attendance requirement. Additional chapel information will be forthcoming.
  • Student Activities – HLGU is committed to a robust and vibrant student experience. The office of student life is developing plans to provide a variety of safe and engaging activities for our students.
  • Athletics – The HLGU Athletic Department will be communicating a comprehensive plan that adheres to NAIA and AMC guidelines. This plan will work to ensure safe practice, competition, and travel for our student athletes. Communication about this plan will come from the HLGU Athletic Department.

Tuesday, June 9 Update

A letter to students from Dr. Anthony Allen, HLGU President

Dear Student,

Hannibal-LaGrange University recently announced that it will resume in seat instruction for the fall 2020 semester. This, of course, is contingent upon state and federal guidelines for safety and wellness.  As a university, we are committed to the health and safety of our student body, faculty, and staff.

We know that the wellness and security of our student body is paramount.  In response to the COVID-19 crisis, HLGU has worked tirelessly to address the many issues faced during this difficult time.  The decision to move classes online was not what we wanted, however, we believe that it was the best decision given the information we received and the shelter in place order given by the local mayor and the state’s governor.

As we prepare to return to campus for the fall 2020 semester, there are a number of important measures the University is taking to address concerns over COVID-19.

  • Continue health and safety protocols
  • Increase sanitation of buildings and classrooms
  • Monitor student density in classrooms and gathering spaces
  • Exploring options for remote health care service and mental health support
  • Work together with the local medical community to help students access healthcare

Throughout the summer months and during the semester the University will continue to exercise diligence and responsiveness in determining appropriate actions to protect students, faculty, and staff. The University will also continue to provide updates to our community on relevant information.

In addition, HLGU will continue to upgrade technology and services to make sure that students are able to continue their education.  We want to serve our students well and with these improvements, we believe that students will have an enhanced experience.  I am grateful for the way our faculty and staff rose to the occasion to move classes online, and was pleased with the efforts of our students as well.

This disruption underscores the value of in seat education and the relationships that are formed here on our campus.  The University is committed to providing excellence in Christian higher education that equips students for success.  We look forward to welcoming students on campus this fall!

Sincerely yours,

Anthony W. Allen

Friday, May 8 Update

A letter from Dr. Anthony Allen, HLGU President

Dear HLGU family,

On Monday, May 4, Hannibal-LaGrange University opened its doors to returning employees. In keeping with the lifting of the shelter in place order the University is resuming regular operations, but has implemented many safety protocols and procedures for its employees. The University will continue to work together with state and local officials to ensure we are doing everything within our powers to mitigate the spread of COVID-19. Presently, the University has scheduled on-campus graduation for August 15, 2020.

My most carefully chosen words could not fully express my deep appreciation for the students, faculty, and staff of the University. Moving classes online due to the pandemic was a herculean feat, and I am proud of the way our students and faculty adapted. Even though we were not able to enjoy the close bonds of relationships on campus, our community rallied to encourage one another, and provide virtual events and opportunities to interact with classmates and our University community.

Today, I want to communicate with you our plans to safely resume in-person classes and residential life on campus for the fall 2020 semester. In the coming weeks, we will share our detailed plan to reopen the HLGU campus and the new procedures we will put into place to safeguard our community.

Of course, our plans to reopen in August are contingent upon guidance from federal and state government officials and public health officials. The Bible says that we plan our ways, but God directs our steps. (Proverbs 16:9) So we are planning in faith knowing that whatever happens we will persevere. The health and safety of our students is paramount and we will continue to vigilantly prepare and respond appropriately.

I am confident that the distinctive, on-campus experience that draws so many to HLGU will resume in the fall, stronger than ever before. Speaking personally, this forced time apart has made me even more grateful for the warm sense of family and community we have at Hannibal-LaGrange. This spring found our campus beautiful, but empty. Our students’ return will bring it back to life.

James 1:2 teaches us that trials and difficulties are for the perfecting of our faith and maturity. So the COVID-19 pandemic is just another experience which God can use to help us grow in our faith. HLGU has faced many trials in its storied history. We even closed down during the Civil War, lost a majority of our facilities in 1989 to a fire, and our science building to a storm in recent years. Through each of these experiences our faith has been strengthened, new relationships have been forged, and we have renewed our commitment to our mission to provide excellent Christian higher education. This, we believe, is a Romans 8:28 moment, and that all things will work together for good through this experience.

We are so looking forward to seeing you back on campus in the fall.

Stay Strong,

Anthony W. Allen
President

Friday, April 17 Update

The CARES Act has approved funds to help students at Hannibal-LaGrange using a formula and based on student enrollment. The Department of Education (DOE) has released guidance on how those funds are to be used.

According to the DOE, 50 percent of the approved funds are required to provide students with an emergency financial grant for expenses incurred or related to the disruption of their educational pursuit due to coronavirus. Those funds have not yet been received as HLGU is still in the funding process.  Once those funds are received, a COVID emergency financial aid grant will be given to our students according to the criteria set up for distribution, including eligible expenses such as food, housing, etc.

Please check back for additional information as we await this funding.

Tuesday, March 31 Update

From Dr. Anthony W.  Allen

As you know, the commencement ceremony scheduled for May 9, 2020 was cancelled because of gathering restrictions related to COVID-19 and the shelter in place order on March 26, 2020.

I am delighted to inform you that HLGU has rescheduled the commencement ceremony for August 15, 2020 at 10:00 a.m. in the Roland Fine Arts Center. Graduating students will receive additional details regarding regalia, tickets to the event, and specifics of the day.

We are excited to celebrate this momentous occasion with our graduates and their families. To our knowledge, this will be the first time that we have ever had to reschedule. We hope this will be a meaningful celebration of the class of 2020’s achievements!

Thursday, March 26 Update

As we indicated in prior communications, HLGU has been diligently working together with local and national agencies to make decisions in light of COVID-19. The Hannibal, MO mayor has issued a shelter in place order as of March 26, 2020.  HLGU will move all course facilitation online for the remainder of the semester.

While our delivery method has changed, our commitment to academic excellence remains. Students are required to check Canvas and HLGU email to stay in contact with professors and complete coursework. HLGU remains committed to engaging our students intellectually, spiritually, and socially. Please stay connected using email, Canvas, and social media to engage with coursework, weekly chapel, and virtual student activities.

HLGU is prepared to accommodate residential students who feel that our campus provides the safest environment, or best meets their needs, in light of COVID-19. Please contact your resident director if you need to stay or return to the HLGU main campus. Because of the local shelter in place order, students will receive additional communication about move-out procedures when information is available.

We recognize there may be questions related to refunds on payments made toward room and board costs. We will communicate information directly to you regarding this matter as soon as federal and state guidance, as well as a variety of other factors, are available. We thank you for your patience at this time.

The decision has been made to cancel the graduation ceremony on May 9, 2020.  Nonetheless, graduates who complete the required coursework will receive their diplomas as scheduled.  Plans for some type of celebration at a later date continue to be considered and will be communicated accordingly.

A Note from the President

Dear HLGU Family:

HLGU will comply with the shelter in place order given by the Hannibal Mayor (see the press release here). According to federal guidelines (CISA), the following departments meet the criteria for essential functions on our campus and are allowed, and in some cases required, to report to campus.

  • Executive Cabinet
  • Office of Computer Services
  • Mailroom
  • Payroll/HR
  • Public Safety
  • Food Services
  • Housekeeping
  • Maintenance
  • Residential Life
  • Faculty
  • Positions related to online learning support

Additional positions may be added as on-campus essential functions by Executive Cabinet as needed.

Other positions must stay home and work remotely if possible. Faculty and staff should visit with their executive cabinet administrators to determine responsibilities.

Compensation will continue through March 31 by HLGU. If the shelter in place order is still in effect as of April 1, HLGU will defer to the FFCRA (Families First Coronavirus Response Act) and enact those directives which ensure continuous compensation for full and part-time employees. Additional details will be disseminated by the office of business services.

Executive Cabinet will continue to meet daily to pray and problem-solve, and we appreciate your prayers as we seek to determine the best course of action in the days ahead. We love and appreciate you and will keep you updated with further developments.

Blessings!
Anthony  W. Allen
President

Tuesday, March 17 Update

from Dr. Anthony W. Allen, HLGU President

In light of these unprecedented challenges, life for us institutionally will look very different in the foreseeable future.  We are working to comply with the Center for Disease Control to implement best practices in order to protect everyone.  I also met with key leaders from our community and continue to work together with them regarding preparedness and response to the coronavirus pandemic.  This group is comprised of more than thirty representatives from organizations in the Hannibal area.  We have identified ways to continue joint efforts in a unified approach to this situation.  At the time of our meeting, there were no positive COVID-19 test results in the northeast Missouri region.  Healthcare officials reported that patients are able to be tested in the Hannibal area and some area residents have already been tested.  Missouri state officials communicate daily and if any cases are confirmed either locally or on the state-wide level, the state will make an announcement.

In keeping with the Center for Disease Control recommendations we have made several decisions regarding cancellations and postponements.

Board of Trustees Meeting- Postponed; Employee Luncheon- Cancelled

Board of Visitor’s Meeting- Cancelled

Chapel- will be moved to online format

Trojan Days for March 27 and April 3- Cancelled

Arbor-Day Celebration- Postponed

Spring Musical- Cancelled

Please remember to pray for one another and look for ways to be a voice of hope to many who are concerned.  I am praying that God will use this as a Romans 8:28 moment for His Kingdom.

Monday, March 16 Update

from Dr. Anthony W. Allen, HLGU President

Hannibal-LaGrange University (HLGU) remains open, however, the administration has decided to extend course facilitation online through April 5.  Classes will not physically meet on the HLGU main campus during this time.  Students are advised to check Canvas and HLGU email to stay in contact with professors.  At this time students should expect to resume in-seat instruction beginning Monday, April 6.  Please note the academic calendar is subject to change.

Residential students are strongly encouraged not to return to campus until Sunday, April 5.  Residential students will be required to complete a check-in process when returning to campus.

HLGU is prepared to accommodate residential students who feel that our campus provides the safest environment, or best meets their needs, in light of COVID-19. Please contact your resident director if you need to stay or return to the HLGU main campus.

A decision regarding any additional academic calendar changes will be communicated by March 31st.

Friday, March 13 Update

The American Midwest Conference (AMC) Council of Presidents have made the decision to cancel all intercollegiate competition for the remainder of the spring 2020 semester.  Therefore, HLGU has cancelled all spring athletic competition. Until further notice, this includes scrimmages, practices, and any other team activity. This is a difficult decision, but the well-being and health of all student-athletes, coaches, administrators, and community is our greatest concern. Due to this decision, residential student-athletes are strongly encouraged not to return to campus until Sunday, March 22. As a reminder, classes will not physically meet, but course facilitation will take place online March 16-20. If a decision is made to extend online class delivery, an announcement will be made by March 19.

Thursday, March 12 Update

The speed at which the outbreak takes place matters tremendously for its consequences. That is why many large gatherings have been canceled around the country. The idea is to slow the spread of the disease, or “flatten the curve,” so that our health care systems can handle the influx of patients they are expected to receive.

Most people, around 80% globally, can recover from the virus just by staying home and resting up. The other 20% do need to seek medical attention, typically to be prescribed medication. A small percentage of those who need medical attention do develop pneumonia or other serious complications. We’re seeing that to be especially true for the elderly: those over 70, or those over 60 with other serious health conditions.

Hannibal-LaGrange University (HLGU) is actively monitoring the Coronavirus (COVID-19) and we are staying up to date on the latest guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).  The University will implement necessary measures as directed to keep our community safe. The University’s administration is conferring regularly to evaluate the current global situation and make decisions to safeguard the health of our community and our students and employees. At this time, there are no confirmed cases of coronavirus on the HLGU campus or in the Hannibal, MO area.

HLGU is committed to the health and safety of our students, faculty, and staff.  For this reason, the University is requesting all students and employees disclose recent travel destinations by completing this electronic form If symptomatic signs of COVID-19 are noticed, please contact the dean of students via email (joshua.pierce@anna-mina.com).

Because this week, March 9-13, is spring break for the HLGU campus, and students and employees have been traveling, University administration has decided to move course facilitation online for next week, March 16-20.  Classes will not physically meet on the HLGU main campus.  Students are advised to check Canvas and HLGU email to stay in contact with professors.  While our local area has not been affected by the virus, if containment becomes more challenging, we will look at additional options.

Students completing student teaching, internships, or required clinical/practicum hours will be notified by academic departments regarding details on attendance.  Students attending the HLGU campus at Three Rivers College (TRC) in Poplar Bluff, MO will abide by TRC guidance regarding class attendance.

Residential students are strongly encouraged not to return to campus until Sunday, March 22.  Residential students will be required to complete a check-in process when returning to campus.  More details coming soon.

We recognize some students aren’t able to travel home and have a need to reside on campus (including international students, student athletes, and student teachers).  Please contact your resident director if you need to stay or return to the HLGU main campus.

HLGU athletics will continue to host home athletic events and will continue to allow athletic competition as necessary to fulfill prescribed protocols from athletic governing bodies.  All travel must be pre-approved by University administration.  HLGU athletics administration will continue to confer with conference staff and the NAIA with a focus on the health and well-being of student-athletes.

Please refer to the HLGU website for ongoing communication.  Additional information will be disseminated regarding University-sponsored travel and on-campus events.  Questions should be directed to the dean of students via email (joshua.pierce@anna-mina.com).

HLGU signed the Certification and Agreement for the first 50% ($379,744) of these funds provided for under Section 18004(a)(1) on April 20, 2020 and these funds were received from the DOE on April 26, 2020.

HLGU sent checks directly to 201 full-time residential eligible students with notification to each student that a grant was being distributed on May 1, 2020.  Eligible students are those who had filed a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for the 2019-2020 academic year and were eligible for federal aid. HLGU sent a second distribution on May 11, 2020, to full-time commuter eligible students with notification to each student that a grant was being distributed. An additional 5 residential students received a grant for a total of 206 full-time residential students.  Two additional commuter students became eligible for a total of 201 who received the commuter grant.  The residential student grant was $1,500 as their need due to COVID-19 disruption required additional housing and food costs. The commuter student grant was $300. HLGU has distributed a total of $369,300 and will continue to distribute the remaining $10,444 to eligible students.

Information concerning this program, HLGU’s distribution, and future reporting can be found by clicking this link to our Consumer Disclosures page.

There is currently no vaccine to prevent coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The best way to prevent illness is to avoid being exposed to this virus. However, as a reminder, CDC always recommends everyday preventive actions to help prevent the spread of respiratory diseases, including:

  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
  • Stay home when you are sick.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.
  • If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol. Always wash hands with soap and water if hands are visibly dirty.
  • For information about handwashing, see CDC’s Handwashing website
  • Follow CDC’s recommendations for using a facemask.CDC does not recommend that people who are well wear a facemask to protect themselves from respiratory diseases, including COVID-19.
  • Facemasks should be used by people who show symptoms of COVID-19 to help prevent the spread of the disease to others. The use of facemasks is also crucial for health workers and people who are taking care of someone in close settings (at home or in a health care facility).

Should I wear a mask?

CDC does not recommend that people who are well wear a facemask to protect themselves from respiratory illnesses, including COVID-19. You should only wear a mask if a healthcare professional recommends it. A facemask should be used by people who have COVID-19 and are showing symptoms. This is to protect others from the risk of getting infected. The use of facemasks also is crucial for health workers and other people who are taking care of someone infected with COVID-19 in close settings (at home or in a health care facility).

Current symptoms reported for patients with COVID-19 have included mild to severe respiratory illness with fever1, cough, and difficulty breathing. Read about COVID-19 Symptoms.

Call your healthcare professional if you feel sick with fever, cough, or difficulty breathing, and have been in close contact with a person known to have COVID-19, or if you live in or have recently traveled from an area with ongoing spread of COVID-19.

Your healthcare professional will work with your state’s public health department and CDC to determine if you need to be tested for COVID-19.

Will there be classes on campus?

No, all main campus in-person classes will not meet for the remainder of the semester. Faculty will deliver instruction fully online.

Will there be a graduation ceremony on May 9, 2020?

The decision has been made to cancel the graduation ceremony on May 9, 2020.  HLGU is making plans to help graduates celebrate virtually in some way on May 9th. More details will be coming about that in the days ahead.  We will also be inviting graduates to a future commencement celebration.  Rest assured, graduates who complete the required coursework will receive their diplomas as scheduled.

Students that had previously chosen to pick up their cap and gown order in person, should visit this weblink which will allow graduates to reroute their pick up in person order to a home ship order to their permanent address for FREE. Herff Jones is offering this free shipping option to assist graduates to commemorate their commencement by at least taking photographs at home with family. Graduates who do not adjust their shipping address may incur shipping charge from the University.

How do I gather my things and move out of my room?

Once the Missouri governor’s stay-at-home order is lifted, we will schedule dates for mass move out.

Will Food Service still be open on main campus?

Food Services will be open for students in the Residence Halls with a meal plan. Food Service options may be limited or augmented by pre-packing meals, removing self-serve options, and other steps related to health safety.

Will there be refunds for housing/room/board?

A COVID Emergency Grant has been made to all Title IV eligible, residential students, not currently living on campus, and in accordance with the Department of Education (DOE) guidelines.

This grant is a direct payment to residential students as a result of the disruption of your educational experience and re-location out of the dormitories for the Spring 2020 semester. These funds, based on need, for housing/food/travel, etc., have been mailed to the address on your self-service.  You may check your self-service to see if you were eligible for this grant according to DOE guidelines.

At this time, the DOE has NOT made these funds available to international students as they are not eligible for Title IV funds.  Please contact the business office or the financial aid office if you have any questions.

I’m a student-athlete, how does this decision impact me? Will athletic activities be suspended as well?

The American Midwest Conference (AMC) Council of Presidents have made the decision to cancel all intercollegiate competition for the remainder of the spring 2020 semester.  Therefore, HLGU has cancelled all spring athletic competition. This was a difficult decision, but the well-being and health of all student-athletes, coaches, administrators, and community is our greatest concern.

I am a University student employee, how does this decision impact me?

Federal work study students have continued to receive pay for the scheduled hours of work with no interruption based off of their financial aid package. Once the package runs out or the semester payroll ends (5/1/2020), whichever comes first, the student will no longer receive pay.

HLGU was approved for a Payroll Protection Plan Loan (PPPL) under the CARES act on April 10, 2020. Going forward, the spring semester non federal work study students will receive their first paycheck on April 24, 2020 based off their work contract through May 8, 2020. If the student is hired for summer work, pay will be based on the hours worked and their new contract.

I have an off-campus internship/practicum/teaching hour requirement. How does this decision impact me?

Students completing student teaching, internships, or required clinical/practicum hours will be notified by academic departments regarding details on attendance.

Will on-campus student activities still occur?

Student Activities is excited to engage with students through online, social media, and virtual efforts. We are especially excited about the potential to interact with students through Canvas which will be used for calendar updates, notification, and conferencing video chats for live streaming events. Please check into Canvas as often as possible so that you will not miss anything. Through these livestream events, weekly video chats with students, and creating content aimed at entertainment and information, Student Activities is venturing into this new space with confidence and mission.

What if I had university travel planned?

All university travel has been suspended until further notice.  Please refer to the HLGU website for ongoing communication.  Additional information will be disseminated regarding University-sponsored travel and on-campus events.

Hannibal-LaGrange University (HLGU) has been closely monitoring changing global government regulations related to travel and is aware of many decisions of home countries to close their borders and recall citizens outside of the home country.  In light of this information and in response to receiving feedback from students, faculty, and staff following yesterday’s posted statement, HLGU administration has decided to expand options for international students that need to return home. Please see revised options below.

Remain on campus. Room and board will continue to be provided for you during this semester.

  • HLGU is committed to the health and safety of students by following CDC recommended guidelines.
  • If travel to your home country is prohibited at the conclusion of the semester, HLGU will continue to provide housing options and ensure a safe environment.

Return to your home country taking into consideration the following:

  • HLGU recommends you contact your embassy to ensure entry into your home country is possible.  Please remember this situation is ever changing.
  • HLGU must adhere to the guidelines set by the CDC and Homeland Security with regard to students returning to the US from areas that have been effected by COVID-19, causing delay or denial of entry.
  • HLGU will make accommodations for the completion of coursework using distance learning. The student will be required to meet the expectations of individual faculty members regarding course participation and completion of requirements.
  • Documentation confirming your travel will be required by providing a copy of your airline ticket to your home country.
  •  Please inform the Office of International Students by emailing jking@anna-mina.com of your decision.

Will students be able to return to the United States if they are continuing their studies outside of the country as a result of COVID-19?

Students who continue to make normal progress in their course of study remain eligible for admission into the United States. However, because of the changing array of travel restrictions, non-immigrant students should refer to their local embassy’s website through the U.S. Department of State for any updates about visa issuance. Also, DHS and CDC websites both provide information about current travel restrictions to the United States. (http://www.ice.gov/covid19)
